Glass Art

A Profile of the Artist

Cathy Shepherd earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in 1980 from the University of North Texas, where she won an award for Best Overall Design. Her fashion design journey lasted 15 years and included designing ball gowns, wedding ensembles, and leather collections and owning a body wear company. The latter tied in sweetly with her second career as an international fitness presenter. She found a creative outlet in teaching fitness and dance.

Cathy melded her creativity with a love for fitness, receiving Yoga Alliance Certification in January 2006 and has been teaching since. Yoga has been a major inspiration in directing Cathy a successful career in the visual arts. In 2009, Cathy’s artistic inclinations to design returned, and she peeked at her boxes of art goodies that survived the end of her fashion career. She decided it was time to start fueling her artistic fire by bringing her creative energy to life again, without limitations. With her husband’s encouragement, she decided to work with her passion: glass. She took professional glass art lessons and her instructor immediately recognized her talents. Her life has never been the same.

Today, Cathy melds together her love for color, dance, architecture, and nature into the inner workings of the body by fusing glass. This balance create an emotion the viewer can hear or feel when interacting with the visual energy of the piece. In 2013, she was commissioned to co-create a large-scale art exhibit at her town’s city hall where more than 50 of her pieces were on public display. Her work has also been featured at LuminArte Fine Art Gallery in the Dallas Design District, voted the 2013 winner for Best Art Gallery on the Dallas A List. Cathy’s glass art is also shown at galleries in Houston and Florida.
